Sector rules

Batteries (electric vehicle, industrial over 2 kWh, light means of transport)

Applies from a fixed dateBattery passport from 18 February 2027
Rule
EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542
What it means
These batteries need a digital battery passport reached through a QR code. Other batteries also need QR-code labelling under the regulation's labelling rules, but not a full passport.
What to do now
  • Confirm which of your batteries fall into the passport categories.
  • Collect chemistry, composition, carbon footprint and due diligence data from cell and material suppliers.
  • Plan the unique identifier and QR code placement, and where the passport will be hosted for its whole life.

What this tool delivers

Digital Product Passport rules arrive product group by product group, and some categories fall under other laws, such as batteries under the Battery Regulation. This lookup shows which rule covers a category, the expected timing, and what to prepare now. Each result names its status and links to the primary source, and the page shows when the data was last reviewed.

  • Status by product category
  • ESPR, Battery Regulation and sector rules
  • What to do now
  • Last reviewed date shown

Which products need a Digital Product Passport?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which products need a Digital Product Passport?

It depends on the product group. The ESPR applies group by group through delegated acts, and batteries have their own passport under the Battery Regulation from 18 February 2027 for certain battery types.

Which product groups come first under the ESPR?

The Commission's working plan names iron and steel, aluminium, textiles, furniture, tyres and mattresses as priority groups, with timing that is still being confirmed.

Are food and medicines covered?

No. Food, feed and medicinal products are excluded from the ESPR, as are vehicles regulated by type-approval law.

How reliable are the dates?

Fixed dates come from the regulations. Dates marked expected or planned come from the Commission's working plan and commentary and can change, so check the source.

What should I do if my category is not scheduled yet?

Prepare the common data now: identifiers, material composition, durability and repair data, and end-of-life information, so you can adapt when rules arrive.
