Pimcore alternatives: four PIM options compared

Pimcore is a wide open-core platform that covers PIM, master data, assets and digital experience. If you only need part of that, or you would rather not run a development project, this page shows what the alternatives include and who they suit.

Why teams compare Pimcore with other options

Pimcore combines PIM, MDM, DAM, a customer data platform, a digital experience platform and a commerce framework. It is delivered as a framework, so most projects involve developers or an implementation partner.

Its licensing changed from Platform version 2025.1: the Community Edition moved from GPLv3 to the Pimcore Open Core License and is free for companies earning under €5M a year. The Enterprise Edition is a yearly subscription. Teams comparing it with other options usually ask whether they need the full platform, who will maintain the build, and how the license applies as the company grows.

The sections below set Pimcore next to three other platforms and show where LynkPIM fits and where it does not.

When Pimcore is the better choice

  • You want product data, master data, assets and customer experiences on one platform.
  • You have developers or a partner to build and maintain it.
  • You need full control of the code and want to run it on-premise or in a private cloud.

When LynkPIM is a good fit

  • You publish to your own storefronts (Shopify, WooCommerce) and Google Shopping.
  • You want published prices and to start free with a real catalog.
  • Catalog, content and ecommerce operators will run it day to day.
  • You need a Digital Product Passport or AI-assisted enrichment with human approval.

How to choose

  1. 1List what you must have: the channels you publish to, the approvals you need and any compliance data.
  2. 2Check each option against that list using the table above, and ask vendors to confirm anything marked as not stated.
  3. 3Run the same pilot on each shortlisted tool: one category, the same product sample, the same channel outputs.
  4. 4Compare total cost, including setup, hosting, developer time and add-ons, not just the license.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pimcore free?

The Community Edition is free for companies earning under €5M a year under the Pimcore Open Core License, which applies from Platform version 2025.1; version 2024.4 was the last release under GPLv3. The Enterprise Edition is a yearly subscription. Hosting, development and maintenance are separate costs.

Is Pimcore a PIM?

Pimcore includes PIM, and also MDM, DAM, a customer data platform, a digital experience platform and a commerce framework. You can use only the PIM part.

What is the best Pimcore alternative?

If you want a PIM your own team can configure without a development project, look at LynkPIM. For an established SaaS PIM with supplier onboarding, look at Akeneo. For retailer syndication and GDSN, look at Salsify. For technical, variant-heavy manufacturer catalogs, look at inriver.

Can I migrate from Pimcore to LynkPIM?

Yes, for the product data. Export your products as files, rebuild your attributes and categories in LynkPIM, map the columns with a saved import mapping and import a pilot category first. Custom Pimcore code and non-product data such as customer data do not move across.
