Google Product Category Examples: 47 Products Mapped to the Right ID

Choosing a Google product category looks easy until you face a catalog: is a phone case an electronics product or an accessory, is an air fryer a fryer, where do jeans go if Google has no jeans category? This guide answers those questions with 47 real products, each mapped to the exact category and numeric ID in Google’s product taxonomy, plus the rules that decide the tricky cases. You can look up any category yourself with the free Google Product Category Finder , which searches the official taxonomy in English, German and French.

How the Google product category attribute works

The google_product_category attribute places a product in Google’s product taxonomy, a fixed tree of about 5,600 categories under 21 top-level departments. Google uses it to match products to searches and to apply category-specific rules, for example the extra attributes required for apparel. If you leave it out, Google may assign a category for you, but automatic choices are often too broad or simply wrong, so setting it yourself gives you control.

  • One category per product. A product has a single Google product category. Your own groupings belong in product_type and custom labels.
  • ID or full path, not both. Use the numeric ID (for example 2629) or the full path text (Hardware > Tools > Drills > Handheld Power Drills). The ID is the same in every language, which makes it the safer choice for multilingual feeds.
  • The taxonomy is versioned. Google publishes it as a text file with a version stamp on the first line. Always copy IDs from the official file, not from a third-party list that may be out of date.

For the full background on the taxonomy and how it differs from your own catalog structure, read the complete guide to the Google product category taxonomy and Google product category versus your internal taxonomy .

Five rules for choosing the right category

  1. Pick the most specific category that still fits. A cordless drill mapped to Hardware > Tools is far less precise than Hardware > Tools > Drills > Handheld Power Drills. Google’s own guidance is to submit the most relevant, most specific category.
  2. Categorise the product, not what it goes with. A phone case belongs under Mobile Phone Cases, not under Mobile Phones. A laptop bag is a bag, not a laptop.
  3. Follow the product’s main function. A multi-purpose item goes where a shopper would look for its primary use.
  4. Use the same category for all variants. Every size and colour of one item shares one category, tied together with item_group_id.
  5. When nothing matches exactly, choose the nearest specific category, not the top level. Then describe the product precisely in the title, description and attributes.

When there is no exact category

Google’s taxonomy is broad, not endless. Jeans have no category of their own, so they go under Pants (204). An air fryer has no dedicated category in the current file, so the nearest match is Deep Fryers (738). In both cases the rule is the same: pick the closest specific category, keep the product exact in the title, and never move it to a top-level department just because the exact word is missing.

Search for the word a shopper would use, then try a broader word. The category finder falls back to the closest matches when no category contains every word you typed, which is how you find where “running shoes” lives (Apparel & Accessories > Shoes, 187).

Common mistakes

  • Mapping accessories to the main product. Cases, cables and bags are not phones, laptops or cameras.
  • Choosing a parent because it is easier. Electronics, Home & Garden and Apparel & Accessories are too broad to help Google or the shopper.
  • Using your own category names. Google only accepts values from its taxonomy. An invented value triggers an invalid category issue.
  • Mixing languages. If you use the full path, write it in the language of the feed. Use the ID to avoid the problem.
  • Ignoring look-alike categories. Musical keyboards, baby monitors, laboratory blenders and pet strollers all share a word with a common product. Check the top-level department in the path.
  • Never revisiting. Categories that were right at launch can drift as ranges change. Review the mapping when you add product lines.

Google product category, product type and custom labels

Attribute Who defines the values What it is for
google_product_category Google (fixed taxonomy) Tells Google what the product is, for matching and category rules.
product_type You (free text, hierarchy with >) Your own category tree, useful for reporting and bidding.
custom_label_0 to custom_label_4 You Segments such as margin band, season or best seller, for campaigns.

Keep the three separate. Your internal taxonomy can change whenever the business does, while the Google category should stay stable and specific. Custom labels are covered in custom labels for Google Shopping bid segmentation .

How to map a whole catalog to Google categories

  1. Export your category structure. List every product type or internal leaf category with its product count.
  2. Map the biggest categories first. The top 20 categories often cover most of the catalog. Look each one up in the finder and record the ID.
  3. Write mapping rules. Map internal leaf category to one Google ID, and use keyword rules for products that need a more specific category than their internal one.
  4. Send unmatched products to a review list. Do not silently assign a default. The category mapping guide explains why an unmapped holding category is essential.
  5. Audit the feed. Run it through the Google Shopping Feed Audit to catch missing or malformed categories along with other data problems.
  6. Keep the mapping in one place. Store it in a product information system so a category change updates every channel, instead of editing feed files by hand.

Once categories are right, titles are the next lever. See the Google Shopping title formulas by category and check your own with the Product Title & Description Checker . If a category value is rejected, the Merchant Center Disapproval Diagnostic explains the usual causes, and the complete feed process is in the Google Shopping product feed guide .

Frequently asked questions

What is the Google product category?

It is the attribute google_product_category, which places a product in Google’s product taxonomy so Google can match it to relevant searches and apply category-specific requirements. It accepts either the numeric ID or the full category path.

Should I use the category ID or the full path?

Either is accepted, but use only one form. The numeric ID is the same in every language and is shorter, so it is the safer choice for feeds in more than one language. If you use the full path, write it in the language of the feed.

How specific should the Google product category be?

As specific as the taxonomy allows while still being true. Handheld Power Drills describes a drill better than Tools does, and a more specific category helps Google match the product to precise searches.

What if my product has no matching Google category?

Choose the nearest specific category, not a top-level department, and describe the product exactly in the title and attributes. Jeans go under Pants, for example, and an air fryer under Deep Fryers.

Can a product be in more than one Google product category?

No. Each product has one Google product category. Use product_type and custom labels for your own groupings and campaign segments.

How often does Google change the taxonomy?

Rarely. Google publishes it as a versioned text file, and the English (US) version used for the IDs in this guide is dated 2021-09-21. Always take IDs from the official file, not from an old list.
